Elevator Avoidance

elevatorI can’t count the number of times when I have noticed someone getting on the elevator and pushing the button to close the door just as I was approaching the door. I can tell you that I appreciate it when someone waits for me to join him or her.

This made me think about elevator etiquette. My mind wandered to so many possible explanations for door closing: are they afraid that I’ll talk to them? Maybe they are in a bad mood and don’t want to share the elevator. Possibly they didn’t see me coming.

I also remind myself that the next person coming to the elevator may be my next client or someone that needs a little TLC that day. It really is the small things that matter and make our days less hectic.

So, think about your elevator etiquette – to close the door or to hold the door? Hopefully, we can remember that the small things really do make a difference in life. Let’s make someone’s day and say “welcome aboard.”
