Communication Tip: Get To Communicate As You

You don’t communicate like anyone else. That’s just how it is. Your unique and individual style shines through. Let it. You don’t have to force it.

You don’t have to work at it – you don’t have to focus on standing out to be original. You are, by nature, your unique self. Allow that to show and live in and through you.

Even if you are encouraged to share a company message a certain way, spend more time bringing yourself to it, vs. so much energy needing to change the words or images to fit you. There is space for both – but one is not more original or authentic than another. Which process suits you?

As an actor, I’ve been stepping into roles others have played 100’s if not 1000’s of times. I get to bring my unique self to the portrayal.

In theatre and film, this unique expression is celebrated. Ten people can play the leading role of Hamlet, and each one brings their unique energy and style to the performance. The exact words are being recited, the same interactions with others, and the same outcome to the story – and each performer embodies the character differently, and the audience experiences the story differently as a result.

An actor doesn’t have to work at standing out to make their mark on a role. Instead, they stand in – they step in fully to who they are and let that fill out the character, the role, and become part of the expression of that person.

There’s a great deal of focus on standing out, being the unicorn, etc. That is great. It may not be your choice, and you still get to be your fabulous unique self. You express it differently.

You get to be ordinary like a butterfly. I think rarely does someone look at a butterfly in a flock, or officially a kaleidoscope or flutter of 100’s of butterflies, and suggest that that one, right there, is ordinary. No – most often, we look at each of them and exclaim how extraordinary they are.

Some of you will always stand out. Some are unicorns.
And some of you will stand out by standing into your most unique and remarkable self – you will be ordinary like a butterfly.

You get to be you.
Communicate as you.
Share you.
