Resilience: Now I’m Learning from Dandelions

“Sometimes a day can feel like a year.” I texted that to a friend last night.

Everything is changing so fast while we try to slow down our lives and flatten the curve. We are inundated with multiple organizations sending us updates on the COVID-19 and what they are doing about it. We are reaching out to friends and family – checking in on how they are doing – what they are doing.

Government leaders at all levels — federal, state, county and local — are working tirelessly on how to support small business and trying to assuage the wake that continues to swell and pound against our shores.

Some solace comes when I realize that we are surrounded by community that cares. People are trying. Long hours – extra work – offered in our time of need. While some are already affected by this pandemic – either through health or finances – others seem to be holding the torch.

This is a demonstration of resilience.

I took a walk this evening. The streets were quiet. I needed to get out of the house. While I was walking, I noticed dandelions popping up everywhere. It’s Denver and we just had a snow last week. Yes, it’s almost spring and trees are trying to bud. We’ve had some warmer weather. AND there has been consistent and recent snowfall.

Thinking about dandelions was a little irritating – when my mind found the beauty. It came to me, “Resilience like Dandelions.”

Resilience is a term that is often used in coaching. We talk to our clients about their resilience and their ability to find and connect to resources. We highlight their ability to bounce back, faster and faster. They are resilient. We connect them to what we know to be true and what we see in them.

If we take a moment, I’m certain we can all think of a time when we didn’t know if we would make it through to the other side. People’s comforting words to us may have seemed meaningless or shallow or like they didn’t understand. Remember, we are all having different experiences right now. Broadway is dark and virtual platforms are trying to keep up with the demand. Our realities are different.

Right now the snow has covered us. It is cold and the winter may feel like it is going to last forever. Like I said – sometimes a day can feel like a year – and yet, beneath the snow we are resilient like dandelions. We are finding ways to reach out. We are being creative and we are being encouraged in the midst of grave truth.

We are resilient because we have the ability to know we have rebounded before – to learn from this current moment– to grow beyond it and to care for each other – to find the opportunities – to pivot.

We are Resilient … like Dandelions!
