BizCom: Are You Moving the Furniture?

Our companies have patterns and we have patterns. You may notice certain patterns in your communication or in your responses to your company’s communication.

We have to stop and ask ourselves: What external things are contributing to our reactions?

For instance, when my external world feels out of control, I choose to vacuum. It is controllable – it is measurable, and it is effective. The carpet gets cleaned.

What are your patterns? Do you tend to move the furniture or vacuum or move piles in your office? What are these things communicating to you?

Once you pinpoint the reason, take a moment to decide one small thing that you could do to shift the need for internal control. Ask that colleague to coffee or plan your next board communication with intention. Take a step to move it forward, and in doing this, you will be claiming your power and, hopefully, saving your back from the ache of moving the furniture.
